Guatemala: Cultural heart

Guatemala: Cultural heart

World Journeys is promoting Guatemala as the cultural heart of Central America.
‘Like Bolivia in South America, it is probably the poorest country in its regional area, hence the country has held onto its rich traditions, culture and dress,’ says director Chris Lyons.

‘Outside of Guatemala City, you’ll see local people in colourful traditional clothing, authentic local markets and get a real feel for the spirit of the traditional Mayan culture.’
Lyons says something not to be missed is the most colourful market in all the Americas, held twice a week at Chichicastenango.
‘Indians walk for hours from their mountain villages to sell their arts and crafts at this fantastic market. Guatemala also has jungles that have, over the centuries, swallowed up the cities of earlier civilizations,’ he explains.
‘You can visit Guatemala year round, but I suggest avoiding the hottest months of June to September, which is also when the most rain falls,’ says Lyons.
