Great Southern Rail launches new season: big growth from New Zealand

Great Southern Rail (GSR) has just opened bookings for travel 1 April 2018 to 31 March 2019.

One of the highlights of the new timetables is the introduction of a Blue Mountains off train excursion for the eastbound Indian Pacific to Sydney.

Dave Atherton, general manager – international sales with Experience Australia, says that the past year July to June, has seen a tremendous boost in Kiwi travellers on GSR’s trains with the largest growth being on The Ghan Expedition.

‘Over 300 kiwis travelled on The Ghan Expedition the past year; growth of over 300% on the same period.

The Ghan Expedition rates very high with our guests as they are enabled to immerse themselves in the destinations with off train excursions in Katherine, Alice Springs including an evening dinner under the stars and the quirky outback opal mining town of Coober Pedy before arriving into Adelaide on the fourth day,’ says Atherton. ‘Due to its popularity, The Ghan Expedition will further extend it’s season from April through October in 2018 and commence earlier in 2019 from March.’

‘Kiwi travellers in the past year have increased by 40% across all the trains operated by Great Southern Rail.

‘Forward bookings this calendar year are also strong in the lead up to launching our 2018/19 season yesterday. Overall there has been a 25% increase in forward bookings,’ he says.

‘We look forward to working with the NZ travel trade over the coming season in continuing to grow the NZ market – currently our second biggest international market.’
