Just an hour from Milan, Lake Como offers a network of trails and ancient mule tracks, leading from pretty villages to lavish villas and magnificent gardens. The seven-day, six-night walk features ‘must see’ villas and gardens such as Villa Carlotta, Villa Balbaniello, Villa Melzi and Villa Monastero. Walkers cruise across the lake to different locations from where the walks commence. ‘Highlights are the Bellagio to Perlo walk for breathtaking views of the lake region, discovering lovely Varenna, the backdrop of the Italian Alps and the lively Riviera atmosphere,’ says A Walker’s World’s Jill Grant. ‘After a day’s excursion, walkers return in the evening to a small, typical village on the shores of the lake where they are based for six nights.
Graded moderate, the walk averages three to four-and-a-half hours per day on lake and mountain trails plus cobbled streets.’ The self-guided package costs $1320 share twin and includes reserved boat tickets on four days plus detailed walking notes and route maps. Details of costs and opening hours for the villas, gardens and attractions are provided. walkersworld.co.nz
