Travel’s ‘Top Dog’ makes change: Recruitment company on market

Travel recruitment specialist Helen Cambell, managing director of TopDog Travel personnel is moving to the Hawke’s Bay from Auckland and looking to ‘pass on the lead’ of her company.

‘My last trading day will be Friday 9 February, but obviously I will work through the recruitment process with active candidates on behalf of agencies I am currently servicing.’

Cambell says she has put Top Dog on the market and is seeking a potential purchaser. ‘The tagline for TopDog is ‘Putting the personal in Personnel’ and I don’t believe I can provide the same high level of personal and one-on-one service remotely.’

The move is being regarded as the end of an era for travel recruitment in New Zealand. Helen Cambell has specialised in travel recruitment for 19 years – 14 of which have been as managing director of TopDog.

‘I was first employed in the travel industry by Bill Glasgow for Ansett Australia early in 1980 and then moved to Francis Travel Marketing when FTM took over the New Zealand representation of Ansett Australia.’

Later she worked for Atlantic and Pacific in Parnell as an account manager, becoming manager of the company’s business travel agency and its 15 staff. ‘That was the biggest business travel agency in the country then,’ recalls Cambell.

Following that were roles at Spencer Business Travel and then Evans Personnel, before starting Top Dog as a partnership in 2003.

Cambell says she has loved the professional relationships she has formed through recruitment.

And a glance at TopDog’s home page shows the appreciation goes two ways. Candidate accolades include comments like: ‘Your professionalism, patience and friendly nature was so welcoming’; and ‘You have been so lovely and helpful through the process of me finding a new job. I am very thankful; you have made me feel like number one ever since our first meeting.’
