Motorhome holidays on rise

The burgeoning popularity of motorhome holidays with clients makes them the ‘new cruise’ when it comes to potential earnings for travel agents, according to rental specialist DriveAway Holidays.

Alison Hopkirk, New Zealand North Island business development manager, says self-drive holidays – especially when it comes to motorhomes – meet the desire for affordable holidays and offer levels of comfort and even luxury to suit all budgets and needs. ‘America and Canada are big for us. A lot of people want to tap into the national parks now and this is a perfect way to do it.’

Nathan Baber, Sydney based national industry sales manager with DriveAway, says motorhome enquiry from New Zealand travel agents is booming this year – up 73% on last year and 2017 was a record year. He says DriveAway puts the results down to a number of factors. ‘Australian and New Zealand collections continue to remain popular – particularly with Kiwis wanting to explore Australia by motorhome. And those travellers who have been through the US, Canada, UK and Europe previously have decided to go back and explore outside of the big cities – national parks, regional areas, wineries etc.’ He says travellers who find motorhome holidays suitable are a mixed demographic – families, ‘grey nomads’, and youngish couples.

‘The average booking value is $3500, so an agent can make quite a few hundred dollars from the one booking.’ DriveAway launched a new motorhome quote and booking engine earlier in 2018. ‘This makes it easy for an agent to quote and book a motorhome for clients. The booking engine is simple to navigate and can be done with the agent and client together – with no mention of commissions and nett amounts. ‘As well as this we have a team of six experienced motorhome specialists in our motorhome team, who can see live availability with nearly all of our reputable motorhome partners. We also have Alison Hopkirk covering the North Island and Mark Richardson covering the South Island.’ www.driveaway.co.nz
