Diverse results on big night

The 2017 TAANZ National Travel Industry Awards produced probably the most even spread of winners in the event’s history, with variation and new winners thrown into the mix.
A notable trend was a steady early call-out of helloworld names – GO Holidays as best wholesaler; Janine Mallon, The Travel Brokers as best broker; Rebekah Hensman of helloworld 5 Mile taking out best rookie of the year; Michelle Malcolm, helloworld North Harbour named best travel agency manager – retail; and helloworld Blenheim, Rolleston, Wanganui being called up as best brand retail – multi location.

It probably explained why chief executive officer Mark O’Donnell was moved to say ‘Sometimes you wonder if it is going to be your night.’
However, that came as part of a brief acceptance speech for the best travel agency brand title – and by then House of Travel had also taken out best brand corporate – multi location (Orbit World Travel), and best brand corporate – single location (Orbit World Travel Wellington). The company also went on for a storming finish with best travel consultant – corporate (Paul Johnson, Orbit World Travel Hamilton), and best travel consultant – retail (Billy Ballentine – House of Travel Lakers, Invercargill).
There was variety added with NZ Travel Brokers also having a strong night  – best broker brand and best young travel agency executive (Angela Bocock) – and Grant Avis of Gilpin picking up best travel agency manager – corporate. YOU Travel Ferrymead was named best brand retail – single location.
Non awards-related highlights included the 500,000 Hawaiian Miles Auction, which raised $7000 for at risk youth, some great dancers sponsored by Total Holiday Options, and another laugh out loud performance by MC Urzila Carlson.
