Cruise & youth - can they mix?

The youth market could be the next frontier for the cruise sector – with 18 to 35s yet embracing that form of holiday.

Sarah Bedford, country manager of STA Travel, says the key is to have cruise product designed for youth and she welcomes developments such as U by Uniworld (offered by The Travel Corporation).

‘We do have a cruise expert at STA; he has done some 100 cruises. But it would be fair to say cruising has not been embraced by youth because of the feeling that ships attract mainly older people.’

Bedford says currently sailing trips in places like Croatia, Greece and Thailand tend to ll the space for younger travellers when it comes to experiences on the water.

‘We would tend to nudge our clients towards that sort of thing.'
