A Tiger on the Tasman?

A Tiger on the Tasman?

Industry observers and commentators say it is inevitable that low cost airline Tigerair will be put on trans Tasman routes once the Air New Zealand – Virgin Australia relationship ends later this month.

That was a common thread at the CAPA – Centre for Aviation Summit at Hilton Auckland this week, and it was not discounted by Virgin Australia’s group executive Rob Sharp when he took the stage. ‘It is an option trans-Tasman. We are first focused on bedding down the relaunch and raising brand awareness (of VA) as our first priority. But we will be watching the market closely and it is certainly an option.’ Cam Wallace, Air New Zealand’s chief revenue officer says that since the news of the alliance coming to an end the only thing that has surprised NZ is ‘the fact that Tigerair has not been announced on the Tasman.’ Peter Harbison, executive chairman of CAPA – Centre for Aviation, says it is inevitable that Tiger will come into the market. ‘That will add a new dimension.’
