Porters' mountain bike trails

Canterbury ski area Porters has new mountain bike trails that are free to use with three zones catering for beginners to advanced riders.

Porters summer activities co-ordinator Jason Collins says the tracks were designed to be fun for all abilities and ages.

‘They are set amongst sub-alpine native vegetation, with uninterrupted views of the picturesque Southern Alps,’ he says.

For those not riding, a short walking track accesses a ridge with views into Crystal Valley and of surrounding mountain tops.

Porters Lodge is also now a year-round operation, with Porters taking over management of Porters Lodge last winter.

The lodge sleeps about 40 and has a café/restaurant overlooking the trails and a licensed bar.

‘Porters Lodge is becoming the hub for the area for bikers, walkers and as a place to just eat, have a drink and relax,’ says Collins.

Porters also offers 4WD transport to the ridge tops of Porters Ski Area, with views from the alps to the ocean.
