New terminal ‘in five years’

New terminal ‘in five years’

Auckland Airport is likely to have a new domestic terminal, integrated with the international terminal, by 2023.

In the meantime the ‘dear old girl’ that is the existing terminal is likely to receive yet another ‘relife’, says Anna Cassels-Brown, GM operations at AKL. Questioned at the TAANZ summit on why the new terminal can’t be finished earlier, Cassels-Brown pointed out that building a terminal was different from constructing a hotel or shopping centre because of all the partners, interests and restrictions involved. ‘It is a priority, but planning an airport terminal is unlike anything else. You can’t design the terminal without designing the airfield, the gates, the parking etc. ‘The master plan is to have it (built) by 2022. But given that it has taken longer (than anticipated) to land the design and it’s still not there, that could push out to 2023.’
