One for bird lovers

A nature cruise on Okarito Lagoon, on the West Coast, is a key feature of MoaTours’ Southern Beauty tour.

MoaTours founder Ena Hutchinson points out that Okarito Lagoon is New Zealand’s largest pristine wetland and home to 76 bird species. Most notably it is the only breeding area in the country of the kotuku or white heron.

‘Something our guests always love about this wildlife cruise is the guides – they live there and know Okarito better than anyone else.’

Guests spend two hours exploring some of the 3000 hectares of waterways and on a cloudless day can see Franz Josef Glacier and the Southern Alps, including Aoraki / Mount Cook reflecting in the lagoon.

The scenery on the cruise changes from tidal flats and reeds to rainforest plants and then a thick forest of rimu, rata and kahikatea upriver. A maximum of 12 clients are on board.
