Honiara – AKL flights ‘dream’

Having direct flights between Honiara and Auckland would be a logical next step for the Solomon Islands when it comes to air connections, according to the head of the destination’s tourism office.

Josefa Tuamoto, chief executive officer of Tourism Solomons, says New Zealanders currently access the islands through Brisbane (seven times a week with Solomon Airlines), Fiji or Vanuatu. ‘Our dream is to have a direct connection. But at the moment Solomon Airlines has only the one aircraft. I think they would expand (the fleet) if we had more rooms available in the destination. Seeing that tangible investment in the country is the key and if we had more infrastructure I think we would see more flights.’ Tuamoto was in New Zealand this week with other representatives of Tourism Solomons, meeting wholesalers and other trade friends and partners. ‘When you look at our global figures we get about 30,000 international visitors a year – less than 2000 people from New Zealand annually. That means we are an undiscovered destination so for people who have been often to other parts of the Pacific. It gives something completely different.’ • See more on Solomons on page 13
