Viva Expeditions’ Africa product manager Tanya Gurtin has returned from Africa’s Travel Indaba with fresh product updates, new supplier developments, and confidence in continued demand for premium African travel experiences from the New Zealand market.

Held annually in Durban, the event is one of the continent’s leading tourism trade shows, bringing together suppliers, tourism boards and travel specialists from across Africa. Gurtin attended the event this month, meeting with key partners and exploring new opportunities.

Among the highlights was a catch-up with the team from luxury rail operator Rovos Rail, including onboard crew members who hosted Viva Expeditions’ MegaLekker famil group in February.

An exciting development to emerge from the event came from long-time supplier Robin Pope Safaris, which is expanding its presence in Zambia with the opening of an intimate camp in the Lower Zambezi region. The property, to soft open later this year, will feature four rooms, continuing the trend toward smaller, personalised safari experiences.

According to Gurtin, the Lower Zambezi is well suited to Kiwi travellers seeking a softer style of adventure.

‘This area offers a mix of experiences including walking safaris, game drives and boating safaris,’ she says. ‘It combines perfectly with South Luangwa, and travellers can extend into Malawi for a broader Southern Africa itinerary.’

‘There’s growing demand for destinations that feel immersive and less crowded,’ says Gurtin. ‘Zambia delivers exceptional wildlife experiences with a sense of authenticity.’
