Anneliese Korsch, Nomad’s agent relations manager, says the new style is an extension of a trend since the company started 30 years ago as an overland camping operator. ‘We’ve diversified into different forms of travel – we still do the tent and mattress but for a long time we have had an accommodated version. A cook still travels with the group and the itineraries are the same – the differentiation is where they sleep. Both are for groups of 20 people.’
Korsch, who was among the exhibitors at Africa Showcase late last week, says Nomad does not look at campers as budget travellers. ‘Often they are people who travel that way because they want to be closer to, and connect with, nature.’
She says Comfort Tours were added a few years ago, with a maximum of 12 passengers, air-conditioned trucks and lodge meals. ‘They are mainly in Southern Africa and have the same sense of adventure.’
Korsch says the new premium offering can be experienced as a traditional tour or self-drive. ‘There are a number of versions, for example we can provide private guides.’
On top of this, Nomad is also seeing growing traction in its tailor-made department. ‘It has become a large part of our company and it’s ideal for multi-gen families and other private groups. We take the budget and wish-list of the client and arrange something to meet those. A big advantage is that we can tap into the buying power of our scheduled tours where suitable.’
Nomad specialises in Southern and East AFrica.
