South Africa has experienced an 18% increase in arrivals from New Zealand following the removal of visas in August 2019. November arrivals grew by 50%. ‘Also, forward bookings from key trade partners have shown an increase of 60% to South Africa. It is the perfect time for the trade to upskill,’ says Mosilo Sofonia, Sydney-based head Australasia hub for South African Tourism.

Although a target has not officially been set for this year, the office says it is looking to at least get back to pre-visa numbers of 17,000. ‘With the increase in the last few months, plus the forward booking outlook, we are likely to achieve and exceed this number,’ adds Sofonia. The comments come as South African Tourism promotes this year’s edition of Indaba – the country’s annual travel trade exchange.
