Bears a big draw for Canada

A large proportion of the itineraries World Journeys sells in Canada include a bear viewing experience.

Marketing manager Caroline Clegg says clients may glimpse a bear by the roadside, from a train, on a small-ship cruise or during a wilderness lodge stay.

‘Generally, the best black, brown and grizzly bear viewing is in summer (June to October) when bears emerge from hibernation to mate and feed on berries, flowers and grass. The months of October-November are when the polar bears migrate back to Hudson Bay, so the bear viewing season there is short.

‘From rustic fly-in lodges to the Tundra Buggy Lodge and even tented safari camps, to the height of luxury, there is a diverse range of accommodation to choose from, but we recommend booking early.’

A World Journeys favourite is Knight Inlet Lodge, accessible only by floatplane, in British Columbia’s Great Bear Rainforest. A four-day package is priced from $6,870 per person, share twin including return flights Vancouver to Campbell River, one night in Campbell River, return seaplane flights to the lodge, two nights at Knight Inlet Lodge including all meals and house wine with dinner, bear viewing and other activities at the lodge, gratuities and various fees.

World Journeys recommends combining bear viewing with a cruise, a Rocky Mountaineer rail journey or more touring around Canada and Alaska.
