Palm Springs – tram, trekking and more

Taking a two and a half hour drive from Los Angeles to Palm Springs, riding the famous tram there and visiting Joshua Tree is a ‘mini-road-trip’ that was being recommended at the IPW US travel exchange last week.

Rachel Anderson, of Palm Springs Aeriel Tramway, says the trip would take in a trifecta of ocean, city and desert.

‘That encapsulates the California experience,’ she adds.

The tramway has been open since 1963, travels over five towers (including two that are registered as historic landmarks) and is the largest rotating tramcar in the world – each tramcar unit carries up to 65 people.

Anderson says that while some passengers are purely on the ride to take photos at the top, others get out and experience the dining options, while still others get out and take the most of being on Mt San Jacinto and the access to some 80-plus kilometres of hiking trails in the state park there.
