Fun art, serious message in Washington DC

CityCenterDC is launching A Wild Race Against Time – a free public art exhibition by Australian artist duo Gillie & Marc.

Running through to 10 November 2026, the installation features 16 bronze sculptures of endangered animals ‘on the move’ — riding scooters, bicycles, skateboards, skis and other forms of transport in a symbolic race for survival.

From a polar bear skiing through the city centre to a chimpanzee and koala cruising on a Vespa, each work invites visitors not just to view the art, but to physically engage with it – climb on, sit beside, or ride along with the sculptures. Leading the journey are the artists’ signature characters, Rabbitwoman and Dogman, who guide the endangered species toward a fictional sanctuary.

Behind the playful execution is a serious conservation message. Each animal represents a species under threat, and the exhibition is linked to Gillie & Marc’s Love the Last Wildlife Fund, which supports global conservation initiatives. Installed across the pedestrian-friendly CityCenterDC precinct, the exhibition is expected to become one of the city’s most photographed cultural attractions of the summer and autumn season.
