Familiar story, new touches from Anaheim

Fresh from a visit to New Zealand for the Brand USA expos, Visit Anaheim’s manager tourism development, Michael Young says key take-aways from the destination are nicely entrenched with the Kiwi trade.

‘New Zealand is a mature market and we’re still promoting Anaheim as a place to stay and use as a base to explore Southern California.

‘We encourage people with a three-day pass to Disneyland to space that out, it’s less exhausting and they can explore further afield as well as doing other things around Anaheim.

‘I have agents in the market quoting that back to me, so we know they have got the message.’

Young notes however that there is always something new to learn about the destination.

‘New hotels include The Westin, JW Marriott and The Viv and they’ve all got rooftop lounges. We’ve got 20-plus breweries and the latest trend is the emergence of speakeasy bars like Blind Rabbit and Strong Water, themed around a ship wreck and specialising in rum-based cocktails.

‘Overall it’s business as usual, telling stories of why seven days is the perfect stay in Anaheim, working through that three day pass and in-between exploring the coastline and taking day trips to LA and San Diego.’
