New off-train options

The Great Southern returns on 1 December 2023 for the 2023-24 summer season, marking the rail journey’s fifth season exploring the east coast of Australia by train.

It includes three new off-train experiences – Fallen Giants Vineyard in the Grampians, the Hunter Valley Helicopter optional upgrade experience, and the National Gallery of Victoria.

David Donald, executive general manager rail at Journey Beyond, says the new options complement the hallmark experiences the Great Southern is known for.

On the journey from Adelaide to Brisbane, guests visit the Grampians (Gariwerd). The new experience here is a visit to Fallen Giant Wines with a guided tour and sampling of local produce and organic wines. Fallen Giant Wines joins experiences such as the Venus Baths Walk, the Boroka Lookout, or a visit to Pomonal Estate.

Two new experiences are offered on the reverse journey from Brisbane to Adelaide. The first is the Hunter Valley Helicopter experience, including a cellar-door tasting at Brokenwood Wines and a 15-minute helicopter flight. This optional upgrade is A$180 per person.

The second new experience is in Melbourne, where guests can visit the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV), the oldest and most-visited gallery in Australia, to take a private tour with a guide and learn about the current exhibitions and permanent collection.

Prices start from A$2,455 per person for Gold Twin.
