Agents get into cruising Spirit

Travel agents not only had the opportunity to look around Norwegian Spirit and enjoy lunch on board last week but also received an in-depth update from NCL business development manager Megan Porter.

The group of 24 in Auckland on Friday also heard about changing trends noticed by the line and what this can mean for trade selling NCL cruises.

Porter says the biggest customer demand is for Europe currently, with 50% of bookings heading to the continent for 2023 -24.

Number two is Hawaii / Alaska and third is the Caribbean.

Porter says the Caribbean is particularly interesting because of the growing number of departure points – Seattle, Los Angeles, New Orleans, Galveston (Houston), Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Orlando and New York.

‘We’ve seen a massive change with the Caribbean attracting new to cruise and Millennials. A lot of people who graduated in 2019 couldn’t do their gap year or OE so they have gone to work and now have more disposable incomes than that market in the past. So they are using that money to take shorter trips to the US and add on cruises to the Bahamas and Caribbean.’

Norwegian Spirit is in Australasian waters for a couple of months, heading out of Auckland on 16 March for Tahiti.

Porter says agents should make their clients aware that though Spirit welcomes families, the ship no longer has a kids’ club and is more adult-centric than some of NCL’s other offerings.
