Tourism operators: Q1 promise comes to nought

The New Zealand Government has reneged on a promise that it would reopen borders and reconnect to the world in the first quarter of 2022 on the condition that the country’s population was 90% fully vaccinated, says the chair of the Tourism Export Council of New Zealand (TECNZ).

Scott Mehrtens who is also managing director of Leisure Time Travel, says this week’s announcement around borders was really just a tinkering of the MIQ situation for returning New Zealanders.

The travel trade and clients have responded with enthusiasm to the Cook Islands Government’s announcement that two-way quarantine-free travel between New Zealand and the Cook Islands will resume on 14 January 2022 (NZ time).

However, wholesalers and agents say they are now keenly waiting for more information on border openings in Q1 2022.

As it stands, the Cook Islands will be the only international destination that people in New Zealand can travel to and from for a holiday, without any quarantine or isolation.

Answers from Air NZ in webinar

Air New Zealand is encouraged by the momentum that a 'trans Tasman bubble' has generated in recent weeks and feels this might become a reality in the next three to six months, according to the airline's chief revenue officer Cam Wallace. 'Even if it is incremental, state by state, we'd take that.'

In a trade webinar which has just concluded, Wallace said the opening up of the Pacific Islands is likely to take longer, because of the medical infrastructure in those destinations.

Time for return of Coral route?

A well known Kiwi representative for Pacifc Island destinations and products has called for innovative ideas to boost travel in the region when it is safe to do so.

Susan Williams, of Hogan and Associates, says one such idea borrows from the past, but generated plenty of interest when she mentioned it on Facebook over the weekend.

Air New Zealand will need clarity around border and travel restrictions before it makes any statement on resumption of services, those who listened into the Kickstarting the Tourism Sector Together webinar heard on Wednesday.

‘When we get that clarity, even if it’s not what we want to hear, we will be able to start making decisions,’ says Cam Wallace, chief revenue officer with Air New Zealand.
