Industry needs to attract youth

With travel agents being valued by clients to a higher level than they have enjoyed for many years, the future for the industry looks bright, delegates at the weekend’s First Travel Conference heard from CEO Malcolm MacLeod.

He says disposable income among older generations, the continuing trend to prioritise travel experiences over material goods and the complex nature of the sector still all add to the worth of an agent.

However MacLeod also identifies challenges for the group and the sector as a whole – especially when it comes to injecting youth into the agency environment.

‘This is one of the biggest conferences we have had, which is particularly amazing when you consider that our workforce is down 30%. We are still trying to attract young staff and I think that is a challenge for the industry.’

He says the average age of head office and out on the field for FTG is about 48 years old.

‘It is good to have experience but we also need young people coming through. Then we need to find the time to train them. It is often easier for employers to get in someone experienced. It is a serious issue and we don’t want it to get any worse.’

The conference at the Hilton Auckland attracted almost 160 FTG delegates and also 60 plus representatives from more than 43 supplier companies. It included a Friday opening function sponsored by Qantas and an awards evening on Saturday night, plus a full day of business with a trade show and presentations.MacLeod says agents have adapted to new business conditions.

‘However, we still require significant support from suppliers and it is pleasing to see so much engagement from them at the conference.’
