Defending against supplier and agent failure

As we come to the close of 2019, I have a quick reflection on a few emerging trends to keep an eye on in 2020.The agent-supplier-customer ecosystem mostly functions well but we’ve seen a few situations develop which can quickly upset that equilibrium.

Remember why we do this, says exec finalist

Remember why you started in the travel industry in the first place – that’s the tip on how to have a strong beginning in the sector from Danielle Scott, customer experience manager with House of Travel.

 

Scott is a finalist in the Best Young Travel Agency Executive – Retail category of the TAANZ National Travel Industry Awards having first joined HOT in the product team after leaving university in 2016. ‘Sometimes we get so busy being busy we forget that this travel opportunity for our customers could be the highlight of their year and that they get the same excitement to experience a different country and culture that we do. That’s why we do what we do. ‘I think it is good to remember this during every interaction, to ensure we are helping hype the anticipation and the excitement for the customer.’

 

Scott manages the Voice of Customer programme at House of Travel and much of her time is spent interpreting and utilising customer feedback to help improve the products HOT provides, the systems it utilises and the overall customer experience at House of Travel. ‘The consistent trend with our customers is that their expectation of what constitutes great service continues to rise year on year and their tolerance of substandard service lessens. ‘Since implementing our Voice of Customer programme 18 months ago we have seen significant improvement in what were already exceptionally high NPS (Net Promoter Scores).

Retail rookie gives starter’s tops

Having a passion for selling travel, a commercial background and the guidance of mentors are the keys for a good start in the industry, says Tracey LeeLewis, of helloworld Waipukurau.

 

Lee-Lewis is a finalist in the TAANZ National Travel Industry Awards 2018 and has been in the travel industry for nine months. She says that having travelled across the world, ‘though there are still many stones unturned,’ she is passionate about making others’ dreams comes true. ‘And working as a lawyer for the 10 years prior to my entry into the travel industry has given me a good commercial understanding of how a successful business operates. Plus with the help and guidance of an inspiring mentor – the helloworld family – I have been able to hit the ground running.’ She says holidays to Australia and the South Pacific are ‘bread and butter’ business. ‘But we also have a strong cruising clientele, river cruising in particular. My involvement in the running of the business will allow my business partner (and mother, Ellen Lee) to focus on tours and escorted group travel.

The Travel Agents Association of New Zealand (TAANZ) is urging its members to take action now to comply with a global security standard to protect confidential payment card information against theft.

IATA has set a date of 1 March for accredited agents to achieve the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards (PCI DSS).

TAANZ president says there is some lobbying to have IATA ‘see reason’ on the time frame, but that said it is important that agents take the subject seriously.

The TAANZ tick and more

The Travel Agents’ Association New Zealand (TAANZ) says its new consumer proposition and a ‘suite of assets’ promoting the benefits of using a TAANZ travel agent are now available for members.

This includes the new look logo and a ‘Five Reasons to Choose a TAANZ Accredited Travel Agent’ chart which can be easily integrated into agents’ own websites.

First Travel Group’s Margaret Spiro, who was on a spacial marketing group for the project, says the aim was to modernise the logo and the message and make TAANZ more credible to the consumer.
