Eight retail travel agents from Christchurch were among the passengers on Solomon Airlines’ inaugural direct flight from Christchurch to Bauerfield International Airport in Port Vila, last week.

For the first time, clients living in Christchurch and across the wider South Island can fly directly to Vanuatu without the need to transit through Auckland — saving time and making a Vanuatu escape an easier choice. The new service complements Solomon Airlines’ existing four weekly Auckland-Port Vila flights, broadening Vanuatu’s reach across New Zealand.

‘This new direct non-stop service provides a convenient and comfortable connection between Christchurch and Port Vila, making it easier than ever for travellers to experience the beauty, culture and warm hospitality of Vanuatu and beyond. This will strengthen the tourism and business links between our destinations,’ says Matthew Findlay, chief executive officer, Solomon Airlines.

The launch of the Christchurch service forms part of a broader push by Vanuatu Tourism Office to deepen its presence in the New Zealand market — a source market that has delivered strong growth in recent years.
