Fiji: book early for key dates

The high flying Fijian rugby team is helping to boost the country’s profile as a sports tourism destination and also serving as a reminder that clients should be booking for 2024 now if they are looking at specific dates around events and school holidays.

Tourism Fiji hosted a rugby breakfast at The Longroom in Auckland for Fiji's quarter final game in the Rugby World Cup, and although the result (a one point loss) was not really what the trade audience wanted, it was still enough to put the Fijians in the Rugby World Cup quarter final.

Sonya Lawson, regional director New Zealand with Tourism Fiji, says the entertainment the national team is providing can only spike interest in the sevens and nines rugby tournaments as well as the Drua and that team’s home Super Rugby games.

‘The Drua will play a couple of games against New Zealand franchises again next year and we know there will be efforts to ramp up attendance and interest around those.’

Lawson says that while rugby is Fiji’s national game and home to people who are even more passionate about the sport than Kiwis, it is not the only sporting drawcard next year.

‘We have the Fiji Spartan Trifecta event coming up in November and the World Surf League in August.

‘The forward bookings indicate that the demand in general will be high again so we are encouraging people to book as early as possible for 2024. We don’t want Kiwis to miss out.’
