Home to world class dive operations and some of the best fishing spots in the country, the area boasts several surf breaks, WWII battlefields, an intriguing pot pourri of Melanesian, Polynesian and Micronesian cultures and myriad historical sites.
Some of Gizo’s many highlights include its bustling local market, the little island named after President John F. Kennedy where he was rescued after being rammed by a Japanese destroyer in WWII, the crescent-shaped Saeraghi Beach and Njari Island, a snorkelers paradise.
Divers can choose from Grand Central Station which boasts the highest fish count in the world with more than 275 species, the 440-foot Toa Maru Japanese WWII freighter, and an almost fully-intact US Hellcat fighter aircraft lying in very shallow waters.
Gizo is also well known for its boutique eco resorts including the improbably-named Fatboys Resort, named after Joe the Fat Boy from Charles Dickens’ Pickwick Papers.
But the pick for those looking for an authentic ‘Swiss family Robinson’ experience is Oravae Cottage. Set on its own private island, the resort features an open-plan wooden bungalow with one double bedroom with double bed, plus an additional four single beds in the spacious living area. The cottage also contains a kitchenette, indoor shower and toilet, plus an additional outdoor shower and an over-water veranda fronting a beautiful blue lagoon, complete with hammocks and deck chairs.
The resort has recently added two additional cottages to accommodate larger groups up to 10.
Getting to stay at Oravae Cottages is easy thanks to a new-release Dive Adventures New Zealand six-night stay priced from $3099* per person twin share, inclusive of return airfares from Auckland to Honiara and Gizo via Port Vila, airport and boat transfers and three meals daily. The package also includes one night in the Honiara Hotel.
